How to ‘Just Be’!

I have heard several discourses and sermons teaching us to ‘just be’. But how to ‘just be’? I have been told miraculous physical and psychological benefits if you practice stillness. Now, with so much technology and entertainment overpowering our mind, there is not much scope of it. Is it? Stillness in chaos?

Well, recently I came across a remarkable person (He wishes to be anonymous), who showed me steps as to how to just be. I will talk about this anonymous writer some other time. But for now, here are the steps. Read slowly.

1) Initially sit calmly, in a quiet place. Once you get the knack of it you can handle even a fish market. But in the beginning, avoid disturbance. Now, close your eyes, listen to sounds around you. The clocks tick tock, humming sound of refrigerator, sounds of vehicles etc….

2) The moment you start relaxing, thoughts will come with hammers to bang your head. All past, present and future thoughts coupled with disturbing intrusive talks will crowd your mind. Hmmm…never, ever block them or react to them, they are just passing clouds. Just observe them and let go. They will pass, you’ll stay. They mean nothing.

3) Now, you are an observer, just observing yourself. Deep breaths will start coming on its own. You will relax. You are a part of larger consciousness. It will take care of you and take you in. Breathe! Breathe deeper again.

4) You will start to enjoy the process. But after sometime thoughts return, egoistical and supposedly positive ones this time. You will feel you are gaining super natural powers or great superior things will happen to you etc! Just observe them with equanimity, do not get carried away, remember you have to just be! The deceptive thoughts are taking you towards result, towards future. No, just enjoy Now! Just keep listening to the sounds….just listen to sounds. Just be! Breathe…

5) Hmmm…so, what now after ‘just be’ state? Well, nothing… nothingness! You just said hello to yourself. That’s it! This is not a result oriented practice but it does bring far better results than anything else. But try not to concentrate on the result part. Just enjoy being in Now and at peace with your surrounding, enveloped by an enormous consciousness! The consciousness will take care of you and everything. Never worry! Have you observed a baby? He is naturally a part of the larger consciousness and so are you. You just have ‘to be’! Let thoughts and disturbances come and pass, ‘just be’ for some golden moments everyday. And say – Hello, Me!

I really enjoyed learning this from my friend. Just felt like forwarding the information and sharing it with you. Love always, dears! May you, just be!

Just a Thought – You Are The Sun!

As I was doing dishes today, the Sun’s brilliance captured my attention through the kitchen window. I was mesmerized. But soon a pathetic dark cloud enveloped the Sun dimming the landscape. Disappointed, I saw more dark clouds in the horizon! They came, darkened everything, moved on, but… the Sun stayed.

I learnt, the Sun shines no matter what! Although, the clouds come and go, they do nothing to the Sun’s core. Just like our inner core, which is bright, still, luminous and joyful, and no darkness can change it! I experienced, the Sun is an outward manifestation of our inner self. It was a lovely feeling!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you, dears. May no dark cloud ever stop you from knowing that You Are The Sun!

Just A Thought – Happy Clones?

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could fire clones of a happy version of yourself across Time – in the Past, Present and Future? A clone that could appear and cheer you up in some of the gloomy memories of Past. A happy clone who could sit beside you in the Present, reassuring you as you worry about things. And the best of all – a happy clone waiting for you in the Future. Just the thought that this future clone would not let you be upset about anything and make you so relaxed, is exhilarating.

Amazing or delusional? I don’t know….but rejuvenating, Yes! Don’t you agree?

I Saw Sunset!

I was lucky enough to catch sunset through my window after a long time. Mostly I am busy or not paying attention. So many of us do not see it! We are either at the office or tied up to experience this everyday magic in the sky. I witnessed it and sat still for a while. It was a pity when the Sun folded back its rays and went down. The moment disappeared. I Caught just a teeny part of the magic and sharing my bliss! Especially for dear office goers who miss Sunset!

Just A Thought – You Are The Address!

I asked – Where is the best place to be?

You said – In the core.

I asked – How do I commute?

You said – Alight on your breath and travel in.

I asked – How is the journey? Rough?

You said – No, full of joyful surprises if you’re on the right path but a lot of illusions if you deviate.

I asked –  What is the address?

You said – ‘You’ are the address!

I went still and the journey began…

The Sound of One Hand

If you have sensitive ears, this post is for you! While reading Rajneesh Osho’s ‘The Book of Secrets’ in which he discusses around 112 techniques to meditate, I came across a wonderful story – The Sound of One Hand. I can not help sharing it!

The master of Kennin temple was Mokurai, Silent Thunder. He had a little protege, Toyo, who was around twelve years old. Toyo used to run errands for the master and everyday he would observe seekers visit the master’s room to receive instruction in sanzen or personal guidance in which they were given koans to stop mind-wandering.

Toyo wished to do the same so one day, he put his head at the master’s feet and asked him for a Koan.

Mokurai refused initially but the child insisted, so the teacher finally consented.

Mokurai said – “Try to hear the sound of one hand. And when you have heard it, then come and tell me.”

Toyo bowed and went to his room. He tried and tried to listen to the sound of one hand but all he could hear was the music of the geishas, coming theough the window. “Ah, I have it!” he thought.

The next evening, when his teacher asked him about the sound of one hand, Toyo began to play the music of the geishas.
“No, no,” said Mokurai. “That will never do. That is not the sound of one hand. You’ve not got it at all.”

Toyo did not give up, every now and then he would find some sound but the master would object -“This is also not it. Go on trying, go on trying.”

Then one day, the boy didn’t come. The master waited and waited, and finally told his disciples to find Toyo. They found him sitting under a tree, absorbed – just like a newborn Buddha. They returned and told the master – “But we are afraid to disturb the boy. He is looking just like a newborn Buddha. It seems he has heard the sound.”

So, the master came, put his head at the boy’s feet and asked him, “Have you heard? It seems you have heard.” Toyo had entered true meditation and transcended all sounds. “I could collect no more,” the boy said, “so I reached the soundless sound.”

Osho goes on to explain as to what had happened to the boy, “The boy had tried since he was a simple boy and had complete faith in his master. Actually, there is no sound of one hand, but just an indirect method to create sensitivity, awareness. And one day, suddenly, everything disappeared for him. He was so attentive that only attention was there, so sensitive that only sensitivity was there, so aware – not of something, but simply aware!

This is a method to make you very delicately aware of the subtle nuances of sound. Center on the word ‘aum’ – a-u-m without any a or m. Just the u remains. You have to intone aum and feel it in three different sounds. Gradually, you will forget ‘aum’. Not only a and m will drop but there will be a state of soundlessness! The state of bliss!”
