Just A Thought – Humor

Take light! Humor can brighten up the darkest path and carry you through the most solemn ‘No Entry’ zones. So, if you’re facing roadblocks or you’re stuck at an intersection or a dead end, try laughter. The journey will be a lot lighter and you never know, the road might get altered altogether. Sending loads of good cheer, smiles and laughter your way!

Small Things#7 – Here is why all Ladybugs are old!

A conversation with my son made me look at Ladybugs in a different light. Ladybugs are real old, mamma,” he said observing a Ladybug on a leaf in the patio. “Why, what made you think so?, I asked him curiously.

“There are two reasons,” he explained in his American accent. “First, beee…cuz their name starts with Lady. And aren’t all ‘Ladies’ suppose to be old…? And second, look…how slowly they crawl! Really slow…!” He imitated the cute Ladybug.

All I could say while trying not to smile was – Good Observation!

Comic Relief

As they watched a movie in the theatre, little Avi fidgeted. “When will spiderman come?”, he asked. “Hush, he will come soon,” his mom whispered, making sure others watched in peace.

In the film, the dreaded biker’s gang was wrecking the town. And the heroine was murdered. Mom had teary eyes, when Avi interrupted again. “What about Spiderman?”, he asked. “Eat the popcorns, Spiderman will come at the end,” she tried to distract him.

He ate for a while and began to play with the popcorns. While in the film, the hero was about to be killed and there was pin drop silence! Just then, to mom’s horror, the spidey fan vocalized loudly –

Spiderman, Spiderman,

Does whatever a spider can

Spins a web, any size,

Catches thieves just like flies, look out…

Embarassed, she scooped the little singer up and walked out of the theatre but the crowd cheered. The film was too intense, they needed comic relief!

Soham!!!

In the lotus position, he sat viewing the derelict pier. It was godhuli bela, the time when the grazing herd of cows returned to his village in subdued light. The calm lake, sounds of fauna, the gentle air settled him for a deep meditation.

As his half naked body relaxed, thoughts surrounded him. He did not try to stop them, just floated with them like a detached companion. Somewhere someone was playing the flute, it was magical! His mind aligned with the music, enabling him to be deeply aware of his breath. SOHAM!!!

Strangely, a cold creepy thing moved along his back. For a second he thought, it was due to Kundalini awakening but no… it felt terribly slimy! It was a KOBRA, crawling on him.

Crippled with fear and holding his breath, he waited till the snake crawled away! Then, leaving the mat behind, he ran as fast as he could!

5 Dirty Secrets of Mothers!

Yo mothers! I know all your dirty little secrets since I am a mother too. We lead a life that demands constant activity, sacrifice and 24×7 caregiving. Our everyday battles involve commotions, screams, tantrums and hullabaloo over silliest of things.

So if we have some dirty secrets, we need to be excused! Shouldn’t we?

1) If the baby is sleeping near our closet, we often wear anything from unwashed nightgowns to hubby’s worn out t-shirt after bathing rather than taking the risk of waking the baby up.

2) We excel in eating messy leftovers of kids. This saves food and our energy. After all, eating is important for us not the style.

3) The rule is – never put your hand in a mother’s handbag! You may get revolted on touching used wipes, toffee wrappers and spilt juices on the inside. It is full if tidbits which is there just for satisfaction sake.

4) Another rule is – watch when you borrow a mother’s phone! It may be battered, greasy or simply discoloured. It often is smeared with  cooking oil, baby food and spices. Most of the time, it becomes non functional and gets reduced to being the favourite toy of the baby.

5) We may have uncountable clothes in our closet but our complaints about ‘nothing to wear’ is justified! One quarter of our clothes are stained with baby poop, food or oil, other clothes are either too big or too small due to changes in our bodies within a span of few years. Some clothes are not ironed and others are simply not washed.

Mothers do many circus acts and perform shortcuts too to multitask. Often, a day seems too small to finish our chores. We need to be celebrated even if we look sloppy, unwashed with messy hair as long as we are bringing up a healthy family. Shouldn’t we!

So, three cheers for all of us! We may be chubby, messy, greasy and at times, overwhelmed and saucy but we are doing the noblest of noble jobs. Please accept our slovenliness for some time and applaud us!

Anecdote – Lesson by my grandma!

My grandma is a grand old lady nearing a century. If you look at her, she may appear formidable in the beginning and then a ringing laughter would ensue, dismantling the image you had conjured up in your mind. The fact is, she is both formidable as well as light hearted. A unique, delightful combination!

Born and brought up in a royal family ( Kharsawan, Jharkhand), she has always had that regal bearing. She believes in maintaining distance from her kids, grand kids, great grand kids as well as recently added a great great grand kid. And we are all supposed to behave in her presence. We rise when she enters the room and remain respectful in her presence.

During my childhood years, we lived with her, so, we had the opportunity to observe her from the closest quarters. I discovered her lighter side later in life. Initially, I was apprehensive of her. She commanded and the household ran according to her. But as I grew up, I discovered the lighter, fun side of her personality. There have been many instances when she would have us in splits.

Here is one such incident. One of our cousins was going to meet a prospective bridegroom. In arranged marriages in India, girls and guys are introduced by their families, they meet up, chat and then a decision is taken unanimously.

So, this cousin was both excited as well as scared before her first meeting. Our granny called her and said, “If you like this man, try to do little something to make him fall for you.”

We were seeing another aspect of our grandma. We all asked, “what?”. She immediately showed us how to woo a husband – “Look sideways at him and then look down… blush… look up again at him… look down and blush again. And then smile juuust a little.” We doubled up with laughter!

I don’t know whether my cousin looked sideways at the prospective groom or not but they ended up getting married!

(Sharing a picture of my grandparents)

I look up to my grand old lady because she always had the audacity to laugh at all challenges that came in her life. In her almost 100 years of life, she has seen many ups and downs. All her peers are long gone now, times have changed but she has remained strong.

I adore her because she is quite broad minded, child like and her booming laughter lightens the most serious of situations. A great devotee of Krishna, she follows what the playful God  says – to celebrate life as it is!

Long live my grandma!

A letter to my classmate!

Hello,

Hope this letter finds you good. I felt an immediate need to write to you after visiting your facebook profile via our common friend’s profile. I was looking for a tall, gawky person but saw a different man there – aged with lined face and a pot belly. I was aghast! There was no sign of the boy who would enter the classroom bustling with energy, taking on the world in his languishing stride.

It seems as if time has flown since I last saw him after our board exams (Kabuliwallah syndrome… remember the story?). We were sixteen then… fresh and so full of excitement to take on the world. I had half expected to find the same boy and initiate a chat with him. But for the first time, I experienced how much the world has changed… how much I have changed! In a flash, I felt being transported from teenage years right into my thirties.

He and I studied together from kindergarten till tenth. Although, we were never best of friends! Infact, I remember the boy was mean to me a number of times and I myself was not a model of good behaviour but we were comfortable around each other. I also visited other classmates via your profile but everyone has changed. Most of us have put on weight, have moved to different places, undergone varied experiences. Life truly has taken a toll on us.

I tried hard to find some semblance, something of the past in your picture but …I gave up.  You looked comfortable around your family…a typical man of the world who goes to work in the morning, returns home tired and waits for dinner to be served at night. Your wife is beautiful and kids are cute. One of them resembles you. I am glad life has been good to you. But again, you are so unlike him. He was fidgety and non-conformist. You are a stereotype family man!

He was ambitious, boisterous and haughty but you seem to avoid confrontations. He questioned everything and you seem to accept everything. I like that you are happy and settled but I liked him better – my happy go lucky classmate who would make the class laugh with his pranks. He was non predictable and creative, you are adjusting with what life has offered you. Good for you!

I smile thinking that once upon a time,  my classmates were an intrinsic part of my world. I had enjoyed their encouragement and would take any discouragement to heart. Many a times, they were harsh and judgemental.

My classmates held the power to make or break me. I didn’t know then that all this would change so drastically. And that I would no longer have to compete with or conform to anyone’s notions. It felt good when I moved on from teenage angst towards maturity but in the process, I took you all for granted. I had never thought I would never find you all ever again…not in the same way.

I get nostalgic remembering the last parting image of my classmates – excited bunch of boys and girls who loved to chat,  bitch, scream and dream. Where did they all go?

Lately, some of you crept into my memory and reminded me of those sweet-sour school years. Perhaps, wanting to re-live the past encouraged me to visit your FB page.  I wanted to meet you all and have a chat online. But I guess…I have lost the connect.

If my letter encourages you to find him – the gawky teenager, somewhere deep within you, then kindly let him know that I am thankful to him for being a part of my childhood.

May be, my letter would make you  curious and you would want to check back my profile. But I warn you – you will hardly recognise me – a married woman with kids. You would not know what to say to me.

But perhaps if you let that tall boy visit my profile, he might find the quiet girl who loved doodling and reading. They will connect, have great conversation and laugh together like youngsters do. Please find and send him once for I am sure we all miss the innocent, musical laughter of our wonder years! Then, may be we will reconnect again with our past.

Best wishes for everything,

Your former friend

And I met Shah Rukh Khan…

Great News, my confidantes! A while back I had jealously shared a post about my friend Pratibha’s meeting with the superstar of Indian Film Industry, Shah Rukh Khan and had expressed a desire to meet him myself. Well, perhaps, someone up there heard me and arranged my virtual encounter with him.

The proof of our meeting is in the video lest anybody should doubt me. I admit I was a little disappointed to see him as a cartoon but it was a great fun experience.  Do have a look:

Let me confide friends! The virtual encounter has been made possible due to the wonderful app called Evertoon, and the voiceover of Shah Rukh Khan is done by my four year old, Adiraj. The other voice is mine, it may sound a little strange to you… I find it weird too!

I and my son enjoyed making and sharing this video. Hope you will like it too. And it was great to meet dear old, Shah Rukh Khan, albeit, virtually. Hope to see him in flesh and blood sometime in the future.

Meanwhile, enjoy my encounter with the dear superstar!

A Short Laughing Message for 2016

My Dear,

2015 slipped away like a fine muslin cloth! It is now time to bid Good Bye to the old year and welcome the brand New Year 2016. My first year of blogging has been incredibly delightful, all thanks to You! I have a world of good wishes for You but primarily, I wish You a year full of laughter. 😀

The Sanskrit book ‘Dasarupa’, a treatise on Dramaturgy, lists six types of laughter. They are:

  1. Smita – A sweet faint Smile
  2. Hasita – A smile slightly revealing tips of the teeth
  3. Vihasita – Gentle laugh in which mouth opens a little
  4. Upahasita – A little more pronounced laughter with some body movement
  5. Apahasita – Booming laughter that brings tears to eyes
  6. Atihasita – Doubling with uproarious laughter

I hope and pray that the New Year brings to you abundance of Joy every day – Smita with tea in the morning, Hasita in the breakfast hour, Vihasita during lunch, Upahasita post lunch, Apahasita in the coffee break and Atihasita during dinner time! Laughter, laughter and more laughter….:)

Stay blessed and healthy friends, see you in the New Year!

A note and gift for Santa Claus from a four year old

  Dear Santa,

I have been a good boy this year. I am sending you a ring this year to say ‘thank you’.

 I wish for:

1) A spyglass

2) A dinosaur for my little brother Aviraj

Thank you,

Adiraj

(This is what my four-year-old came up with when I asked him what he wants from Santa Claus this Christmas. He thought about giving first. He said we should give star war ring to Santa Claus, make him happy and also cook food for him. He also thought of giving carrots to Santa’s reindeers on their arrival. He went on to tell me about the gifts he wanted – Spyglass like Jake the pirate. And wished for a dinosaur for his baby brother.

So, together we put together this special note and gift for Santa Claus and have kept it at a safe place for Him. Hope we make Santa smile this magic season…Ho Ho Ho)

8 absolutely mad moments of my Life

I have always been a little absent minded in my ways. Those who know me closely have accepted my limitation and tolerated quite a lot of embarrasing situations with me. I try to be more focus, alert and active but to no avail.

Moreover, I am butterfingered so I often don’t trust myself when I serve food to people in social gatherings. I can drop or spill food on anyone and everyone. And yes I often have the tendency to get over excited for no reason at all and use wrong expression to greet someone.

I guess all of us go through such mad moments but embarassingly, I have been a frequent victim. Well, here are a few of those incidents that left me oh-so-red in the face. Read on frens, and have a good laugh at my expense😀. I will start with the most recent ones.

  1. The teacher at my son’s preschool was quite at a loss of words when she asked me to sign out on the iPad and I signed with a ball pen on the iPad!!!
  2. My guests at a recent party almost freaked out when they noticed that I had served them Olive Oil instead of Apple fruit juice.

  3. When my eldest was born in July, I immediately messaged everyone informing the good news. Most of them replied and questioned – why was I late by a month in informing??? I realised I had written – June instead of July in the message.

  4. Once I messaged my boss instead of my colleague that the boss was going on leave for a few days so happy time ahead!! While I prayed that the message somehow disappeared before getting delivered, the reply from the boss was – ‘Is this message meant for me??’ I was aghast!!

  5. I dreamt that I had thrown my brothers’ slippers outside the boundary wall of our house. Well, when I woke up I actually threw it and told my astonished brother that atleast one of my dreams had come true today. He threw mine too!!

  6. At a grand wedding reception in Winters, I received glares from all around me while I was chatting with my sister. I thought I was looking good until I noticed I was about to pour my tea right into the ear of a seated guest, who was trying hard to maintain his regal composure and dignity.

  7. A snack vendor in India shouted at me rudely – ‘Oye Madam’, while I was on phone with my mother. I noticed he was right to be rude. People were moving away from me as I was emptying my half eaten plate ( golgappas) on his pile of fresh eatables instead of the dustbin. I apologised profusely and fled.

  8. Once I saw a man frantically running towards the car I was seated in, with a wide eyed look and threatening gesture. I was engrossed in reading something. But instinctively, I knew there was something amiss. I had absent mindedly entered his car and was sitting comfortably there!! Before I could rush out of the car, he stood right in front of me with his hands on hips. I understood… it was time for another big apology!!

These are just a few incidents but there have been innumerable such mad moments in my life. The great thing about these funny incidents are that one always laughs heartily after the moment passes. And remembers it for a long long time with a smile!

Even my father in law had experienced one of such moments not long ago and we all had a good laugh over it. He had gone to a lunch buffet at a restaurant that had glassses all around. The waiters were serving too. In front of the salad tray, he went on to ask his reflection to serve him some more salad!

Well, I guess you all laughed and that was my sole purpose in sharing these incidents. I am sure you all must have experienced these mad moments, do share here if you can.
