Who is the biggest film star in the world?

If you ask Google – Who is the biggest movie star in the world? Click comes the reply – “The numbers prove that Shah Rukh Khan is the biggest movie star in the world.” Whoa a desi!

We all know his life story – a nobody with a dream, comes to Mumbai to become an actor and eventually becomes the king of the Indian film industry. He did not stop at that – He is the biggest star in the world now!

The fact that he is a self made, hard working family man totally endears him to his fans. I have grown up binge watching his movies, applauding his scenes, defending him and knowing that – Shah Rukh Can! He is romance incarnate in Indian Movies.

From ‘Army’ and ‘Circus’ days when my mom used to exclaim – ‘Ye ladka hero banega'(This boy will be a film star  someday) to ‘Hello Zindagi’, he has come a long way.

Here are my coolest top 10 SRK movies.

  1. Chak de

2. Swades

3. Kabhi haan kabhi na

4. DDLJ

5. Rab ne bana di jodi

6. Chennai Express

7. Kal ho na ho

8. Raju ban gaya gentleman

9. Veer zara

10. Fan

(Yeah, I liked Fan, despite all the criticism. I am yet to watch his newly released, Dear Zindagi, hence it is not in the list)

Recently, Netflix signed a deal with him in order to capture the coveted film market in India and stay one step ahead of rival Amazon. The charismatic Khan is not much known in the western world but the deal is sure to give him a wider exposure.

But meanwhile, we SRK fans are happy in the knowledge that he is the biggest movie star in the whole wide world with high grossing films, enviable film offers and a huge Twitter following.

BTW, What is your favourite SRK film?

Madhubala – Fairest of them all…

Arched eyebrows, classic features, mischievious smile…the Venus of the silver screen was born to captivate the very heart of India! Yes, I am talking about Madhubala, who was and remains the most beautiful actress of Indian film industry.

Her face had an unforgettable charm and expressions were priceless. No wonder, her popularity went beyond borders. She appeared in American magazine Theatre Arts in 1952. The magazine remarked, “The biggest star in the world, and she’s not in Beverly Hills.”

The first para says – “The actress with the greatest following, in numbers and devotion, is not to be found in Hollywood, but on the opposite side of the planet – in Bombay, India.” At that time, she was just nineteen. She had joined the film industry at the age of nine and never looked back.

Large languishing eyes, full lips and an aquiline nose, the camera couldn’t help loving her. Also, her unique appeal arose from a combination of personality traits – playfulness, sensuosness and innocence. She never looked wanton or cheap in her movies rather dignified and adorable.

Who can forget her lovely expressions in the following song sequences  – Aaiye Meherbaan, Mohe Panghat Pe, Ik Pardesi Mera Dil Le Gaya? It seemed that she  tantalized the camera with every move. She was truly an actress par excellence.

It was a pity she died young at the age of 36 after going through trying times in personal life owing to break up with the superstar Dilip Kumar. She married the versatile singer actor Kishore Kumar but could not enjoy marital bliss for long as she fell terribly sick due to a heart disease.

Here are some pictures of the timeless beauty, whose face still seems to be attracting fans. She continues to be every artists’s dream portrait and every poet’s muse in India.

And I met Shah Rukh Khan…

Great News, my confidantes! A while back I had jealously shared a post about my friend Pratibha’s meeting with the superstar of Indian Film Industry, Shah Rukh Khan and had expressed a desire to meet him myself. Well, perhaps, someone up there heard me and arranged my virtual encounter with him.

The proof of our meeting is in the video lest anybody should doubt me. I admit I was a little disappointed to see him as a cartoon but it was a great fun experience.  Do have a look:

Let me confide friends! The virtual encounter has been made possible due to the wonderful app called Evertoon, and the voiceover of Shah Rukh Khan is done by my four year old, Adiraj. The other voice is mine, it may sound a little strange to you… I find it weird too!

I and my son enjoyed making and sharing this video. Hope you will like it too. And it was great to meet dear old, Shah Rukh Khan, albeit, virtually. Hope to see him in flesh and blood sometime in the future.

Meanwhile, enjoy my encounter with the dear superstar!

Sadhana and Audrey Hepburn, look alikes?

They say that there are seven look alikes in the world! Well, I cannot be really sure of the theory but one thing really struck me when I watched the iconic Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ – she looked very similar to our Indian film actress Sadhana.

The veteran Indian actress, passed away last night in India, leaving her fans and film industry in a state of shock. She was 74.

It is said that Audrey Hepburn’s hairstyle had inspired her popular fringe-cut. And just like her British predecesdor, the style diva revolutionised the Indian fashion scenario of 1960s. She was responsible for popularising churidaar-kurta, which is still a favourite with women in India.

Undoubtedly, both will be considered peerless beauties always. Here are some of the pictures of the beauties for you to compare. RIP Sadhana!

And she finally met Shah Rukh Khan…

Pratibha and I have been friends since college days. Right through those wonder years to our present day, we have been avid fans of Shah Rukh Khan. No criticism, no controversy, no debate has lessened our affections for him!

There is something about SRK…something unexplainable…perhaps that x-factor which makes him a roaring success in Indian film industry. He is a study in contrast in some of his superhits  – easy going as well as passionate ( Raj in DDLJ), submissive as well as persevering ( Suri in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) and funny as well as heroic ( Rahul in Chennai Express). But romantic roles best suit him…little wonder then that ladies – fifteen to sixty – all swoon over him.

Well, Pratibha and I had always nurtured a dream to meet him. During my years as a journalist, I met a lot of actors but the dream man remained elusive. However, to my immense jealousy, she got to meet him in Dubai recently.

Understandably, she is over the moon! Well, here is what she has to say about her romantic rendezvous with the superstar.

“So finally I met SRK.. The man who has epitomised the word Romance in the history of Indian cinema. A person who with sheer hard work, luck and belief in himself, achieved the stature of being the King of Bollywood .Ya, I met this dream man in person today. I wanted to tell him so many things… but I was tongue-tied. Already, I was getting more than I had asked for. I felt my heart beating fast before meeting him and the moment I saw him.. I was like O MY GOD… This couldn’t be real!! And then the organizers of the event asked us to get a picture clicked and leave the room.

But how could I leave without even shaking hands with him? I said No and refused to leave without meeting him in person. And then the gentleman himself stood up and invited us to come. Wow…this was getting larger than life! I grabbed this once in a life time opportunity and gave him a tight hug. I also added what I had been wanting to tell him since long long time – I Love You. He said, “O My God, that’s sweet”!!! So here I am …all smiles with a singing heart 😍😍💃💃. Hoping to stay like this until I meet him again!”

Her dream has been realised…mera number kab aayega???
