Whom should the fair lady marry?

A beautiful maiden had three equally good-looking and worthy admirers to choose from, whom would she marry? Betaal, the celestial spirit, asked the legendary king Vikramaditya in the famous Sanskrit story book – Baital Pachisi.

The question seemed baffling but the answer given by the wise king at the end of the story was exceptionally wise. Read the story (in my words) and decide for yourself – If you were the fair girl, whom would you choose and why?

Once there was a beautiful and intelligent Brahmin maiden, who was sought by many young men of the time. But her father wanted to choose the best of all her admirers.

Three handsome Brahmin young men of Kanauj, who were great scholars arrived, and each one claimed that they were in love with the lady. Her father was perplexed as each one was great in every sense. The girl couldn’t choose because she did not want to hurt sentiments.

The three men’s ardent love for the girl did not lessen with time. They stayed on for months and months, showing their commitment towards the lady. But tragedy struck one day, the maiden fell ill and died. Her father and the devoted men were heart broken.

After the lady’s funeral, the first man, built a hut there, slept on a bed made of her ashes, and got his food by begging.

The second took her bones and went far to dip them in the sacred Ganges river.

And the third became a wandering monk and travelled around.

One day, the wandering monk, stopped at a Brahmin’s house to spend the night. The Brahmin thought he was a great ascetic and welcomed him. Dinner was served and the Brahmin’s wife and son joined them. But the son was quite mischievous and he began to trouble his mother by throwing tantrums. The mother got very angry and threw him into blazing fire. The boy turned into ashes.

The third man was shaken and began to scream. He thought the Brahmin’s family was that of vampires and demons. The merchant calmed him down, brought a book, murmured a magic spell and threw water on the ashes. The boy got up, alive as before. The third man was joyous. Here was the way to revive the maiden!

That night, he stole the magic book and returned to the cremation ground. The first man was already there and the second man had returned after immersing her bones. The third man told them about the magic book and asked the first man to bring the ashes of the girl.

The lady came back to life, prettier and more radiant than before. And the three men began to claim her recounting their respective, trials and tribulations.

The first man said – I kept her ashes. That is why she came to life. She is my dear wife.

The second man said – She came to life because of my journey to the sacred river. She is my wife.

The third man said – I brought her to life by my magic spell. She is my wife.

Here Betaal stopped and asked the good king – Whom should the fair lady marry?

(At this point, while reading the story, I considered the monk as the worthiest one because he found the way to revive the girl. But after understanding the king’s answer, I agreed with him.)

King Vikramaditya said – The third man painfully found the magic spell and brought her back to life, but he did what a father ought to do. He is not her husband. And the second man who went to dip her bones in the sacred river, he did only what a son ought to do. He is not her husband.

But the first man who slept with her ashes and lived a hard life in the cemetery did what a lover ought to do. The first man deserves to be her husband.

Betaal agreed but flew back to the tree to test the king’s constancy. And the loop of stories continued with questions and wise answers in the book.

But, If you were the fair girl, whom would you choose?

A Gift For You – Princess ebook

My Dear,

With immense pleasure I announce the publishing of my first ever book – The  Princess with Brown Teeth in ebook format. It is free and a gift to you as well as your little one. You can also read the entire book online without downloading it by clicking here (click on PREVIEW after the link opens and happy reading!). Kindly leave an honest review.

I have given my best to this book, with little professional help, utilizing every little moment I have had, away from my two kids. I have done the illustrations myself with some help.

It is far from being perfect but I am happy that I completed it despite problems.

After becoming a mom, I entered kids’ magical world and saw wonder and creativity here. Many stories would enter my thoughts and leave but one perfect morning ‘The Princess with Brown Teeth’ came and thankfully stayed on. I just had to write it.

Although, I completed the book last month itself, I had difficulty letting it go.  That is why I could not summon the courage to publicise it earlier than now. I had the same set of feelings when my son started kindergarten! But now I am leaving it in your hands!

I always wanted to be an author and finally managed to self publish a book with the grace of Krishna!

Many of my friends on WordPress are already famous published authors who know far more than me. I humbly request you to point out at my mistakes for constructive criticism.

I sincerely hope that you and your little ones love this book as much as my little ones do.

Love always,

Shivangi

Cinderella in the Metro!

Mr Charming tried hard to fit the footwear into her feet. Was she the girl in the metro?

He had fallen in love when he was 20. He was travelling by a metro while she slept right across him with her face hidden under jacket. But what had caught his eye were her lovely legs which rested on the seat.

At one of the stations, she woke up with a start. And before he could catch a glimpse of her face, she ran out of the train leaving behind her stilettos. The crowd enveloped her. He lifted the footwear and kept it.

Life did not move on for him, though. Professionally, he became the proud owner of a chain of hotels. But he stayed single, in search of the gorgeous owner of those stilettos.

Occasionally, he would request a guest to try it on. They would do it willingly, but he never found the right legs.

This time, the stilletos fitted perfectly! He looked at her finger… no ring!  Elatedly, he asked her to join him for dinner.

This is my entry to the flash fiction challenge, Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers hosted by the lovely Priceless Joy. We are given a photo prompt and approximately 75-175 words with which to create our stories. This challenge is open to all who would like to participate. For more information, please CLICK HERE. The Nocturnal Adventure of Baby Boo

IMG_0464

If you have babies and kids in your house, Baby Boo might have visited you. This is Baby Boo’s picture, I captured his picture a long time ago.

He is from Babyland, the heavenly abode of magical toys, slides, foods and games. This lovely place is nestled in the Trampoline Cloud and floats all across the Universe.

The toys and slides  of Babyland are created by the Baby God from love of mothers’ hearts. Baby God watches over Babyland all the time. It is the second safest and the loveliest place in the universe after a mother’s lap.

Now, if you have forgotten Babyland, try to recall it. All of us have visited it as kids in our dreams and imagination. When you were a kid, you frequently went there on winged clouds but you forgot about it when you grew up. You can still go there if you try not to grow up.

Baby Boo was created by a simple mother’s love and he has been residing in Babyland since time immemorial.

He is very naughty and often escapes from his land to travel across the Globe in search of adventure. His mischiefs are forgiven by the Baby God simply because he is His most loving toy.

Whenever Baby Boo wants to escape, he simply jumps off the Trampoline Cloud and usually lands in the arms of some sweet kid on Earth.

One beautiful night, Baby Boo wanted to have a night out. He escaped Babyland and landed in the crib of Baby Vir. Now, Vir was having a restless night. His diaper rashes were causing him trouble. Baby Boo snuggled next to him and sang the sweetest lullaby. He got carried away and his voice grew louder and louder.

Baby Vir went back to sleep but the loud singing woke up his mum. She tiptoed to his room. Who was singing? She wondered. Perhaps the musical caterpillar was left on or was it the teddy bear? But the voice was unfamiliar.

She peeped into Vir’s crib and was horrified. She had never seen this toy Baby Boo before. They had never bought that toy from the shop.

On the other hand, Baby Boo stopped singing and tried to hide under Vir’s blanket. Kids know all about him but grown ups are not supposed to know. The Baby God would be angry.

To his relief, Vir’s mum fled from the nursery to wake up his papa. Baby Boo got a chance to escape. He kissed the sleeping Vir and promised to return.

He crawled out of the window into the ‘Strolling Wind’ and flew back to Babyland. He just wished that his little escapade remained undiscovered. And we all know that a Baby’s wish always come true.

Vir’s mum and papa found him sleeping blissfully with a magical smile on his lips. His papa dismissed mum’s doubts blaming it on her sleeplessness and hectic schedule. She was perhaps in a dreamy state! They kissed baby Vir and went back to sleep. Peace was restored in the household.

( This blog post is dedicated to all the sweet little ones in the whole wide world. Even to those in mummy’s tummy! There would be more stories of Baby Boo in the days to come. So stay glued and stay blessed. Love to the little ones always.)
