Today is Ramnavmi, the birthday of Lord Rama. The idol of baby Rama is being worshipped by Hindus all over the world.
It is known that Lord Rama was born in the Satyuga (golden age) and he was an avatar of Lord Vishnu, a great king, idealist and lover of mankind. The epic Ramcharitmanas by Maharishi Valmiki, deals with his life and ideals. But there is a lesser known fact, which may be beneficial for everyone even the non Hindus, and especially if you are into meditation – The name Rama is more powerful than The Lord himself. The sounds ‘Ra’ and ‘ma’ when combined together, emits the divine name ‘Rama’ , similar to ‘Om’.
Maharishi Valmiki has emphasised throughout the holy book that the idea and name of Rama is the greatest of all. There is a reason for it. Valmiki was a dacoit and an evil man. When asked to chant Rama by a saint, he could not utter it. So he chanted ‘Ma-Ra’ (not even Ra-ma), and got purified in the course and transformed into a revered saint and writer.
It is simply because Rama was in human form…but his name is the Shabd, the word. Word is God. The holy Bible says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Chanting the name Rama is very easy and effective. Just keep saying it to yourself while doing your daily chores. The vibration of the name, when spoken aloud – ‘R-a-ma’ charges the atmosphere, wards away evil and restores peace within.
And when you focus on’Ra-ma’ during meditation and Pranayama (Inhalation/Exhalation), it gives amazing results. According to Hindu mythology, we are living in Kaliyuga (the last and worst of all four ages, Satyuga, Dwapar, Treta and Kaliyuga). This may be the worst of times but the best age for finding God within by just chanting the ‘shabd’ Rama.
Lord Hanuman, the monkey God, just by doing ‘Rama nama japam’ could cross seas, fight evil creatures, carry Sanjeevani mountain, could save Rama and Lakshmana..and thereby became immortal. Ramdas, Tulasidas, Kabirdas, Thyagaraja, Ramadasu, Sai Baba, Papa Ramdas, Gandhi, Yogi Ramsuratkumar are some of the greatest devotees of Rama and preached that the name of Rama is the most powerful.
This popular Sanskrit Shloka sums it all:
lराम रामेति रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे ।
सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने ॥
1: By meditating on “Rama Rama Rama” (the Name of Rama), my Mind gets absorbed in the Divine Consciousness of Rama, which is Transcendental,
2: The Name of Rama is as Great as the Thousand Names of God (Vishnu Sahasranama).
So, give a try to this easiest form of meditation. Anytime, anywhere…
